Mt. Monadnock

August 10, 2002

We camped at Monadnock State Park. The party consisted of me, Bob, and Bob's son Timmy. This was Timmy's first "real" camping trip. We built a fire and roasted hot dogs under the stars. After TImmy went to bed, Bob and I stared up at the stars hoping to catch some of the Peresids. However either we were too early, or facing the wrong direction, because we didn't see any shooting stars. We did count about 9 satelites going by, including the ISS and a satelite traveling north to south (makes you wonder...)

Anyhow, I woke up with a raging headache and a fever. Not that I would let that keep me from hiking Monadnock. After riding into Peterborough for breakfast (Friendly's) we went back, broke camp, and made our way up the mountain.

We gained altitude quickly early on, and reached the spring. A forest worker was clearing some trees. I asked him "Is it ok to drink from the spring?" His response was "We don't test it everyday, so I can't recommend it." This was a drag for me, because I had planned on filling my bottles there. Yet again, I was embarking on another trip with too little water...

Any how, all three of us made it to the peak without incident. Timmy did a great job. Oh, to be young, flexible, and full of energy again! The peak was crowded (about 3 dozen people) and loud (5 planes flew over while we were there). This is NOT the place to "get away from it all"...

Finally, on the way down, I broke down and drank from the spring... SO cold and refreshing! And I didn't get sick! However I think this was the last hike I'll take without a purifier...

OK, enough chatter. Here are the pics:
